An alternative report to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
In June, together with ECOM, we submitted an alternative report to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. In the report, we analyze the dialogue between CEDAW and Russia concerning the previous report by the state and the implementation (or, rather, the non-implementation) of the Committee’s recommendations, and the new official periodic report submitted by Russia. We raise key issues of violence and discrimination against lesbian and bisexual women and transgender persons in the Russian Federation, such as: the effects of the “propaganda law”, hate crimes, online harassment, hate speech, persecution for spreading of SOGI-related information on the Internet, the violations of parental and labor rights of transgender people and other issues. After each section we suggest a list of questions to be posed to the Russia’s delegation during the next session, in preparation for the next periodic report.
